Collaborators
Give cross-organization access to people who work with you on specific content
A collaborator is a user who works with your organization but is not part of your internal team. Examples include a partner venue, a guest editor, a freelance designer, or an agency working on a campaign. Collaborators get limited access to your site, scoped to the content they need.
Collaborators are different from users in two ways:
- A user is part of your team. They have a role on your site that decides what they can see and change.
- A collaborator belongs to another organization. They have specific permissions on the sites you have granted their organization, rather than a role that applies everywhere.
When to use a collaborator
Use the collaborator model when:
- An external partner needs to manage content related to their organization. For example, a venue partner might edit their venue details, or a guest writer might edit their author bio.
- A freelancer or agency needs limited access to a specific campaign or section.
- An organization running another Basker site needs to edit content that is shared between your sites.
If the person is part of your team and works across your site, invite them as a regular user instead. See Inviting users.
How collaborator access works
Each collaborator is linked to:
- A user account: the person signing in.
- An organization: who they work for.
- The sites they can reach: access is scoped to the specific sites you grant the organization, and nothing else.
- A set of permissions: which content they can access, and what they can do with it.
The organization's permissions apply on each site you have granted it. Basker adds these permissions on top of anything the linked user already has there. A collaborator's effective access therefore combines their own role on a site with the permissions granted through their organization.
Permissions granted to a collaborator's organization apply across each site you share with it. A staff role works the same way. Grant only the permissions and the sites the partnership needs.
Setting up a collaborator
Setting up collaborator access usually involves Basker support. Collaborators span organizational boundaries, so Basker verifies the setup on both sides. Contact sales to add a new collaborator relationship.
Once set up, the collaborator's organization appears in a separate Collaborators section on the Users page. Expand it to see the people from that organization who can sign in.
