Announcement bar

A site-wide strip above the header for short, timely messages.

The Announcement Bar runs a thin strip across the very top of every page, above your header, for a short message that applies to the whole site — a closure notice, an opening-hours change, or a limited-time offer. You add it to your header, and it appears on every page at once.

The bar itself sets only the appearance. The message you display in it is written and scheduled separately.

Where the message comes from

The bar shows whatever message is currently live in your Announcements area; the wording, links, and scheduling are set there. In the block editor, a Manage Announcements → link takes you straight there.

Editing what the bar says is therefore a two-step task: set up the strip's look here, then write or update the message in Announcements.

Appearance

Two options control how the strip looks. Both sit on the block's Appearance tab, alongside the shared controls below.

Style sets how the message is presented:

  • Static Bar — a fixed strip with the message held in place. This is the default.
  • Scrolling Marquee — the message scrolls horizontally across the strip, useful for a longer line of text in a narrow space.

Border sets the edge that separates the strip from the header beneath it:

  • None — no border.
  • Bottom — a line along the bottom edge only. This is the default.
  • All — a border around the whole strip.

Shared controls

This block has no Layout tab, so width, direction, and alignment don't apply. Its padding and margin start at 0.

Worked example

A theatre wants "Box office closed Mondays" running across the top of the site:

Add the Announcement Bar to your header

Set Style to Scrolling Marquee so the line scrolls, and leave Border on Bottom to separate the strip from the header below it.

Write the message in Announcements

Use the Manage Announcements → link to open your Announcements area, then add "Box office closed Mondays" and set when it should appear and expire.

Check the live site

The bar surfaces the active announcement above your header on every page. When the announcement's schedule ends, the strip clears on its own.
